If an individual wishes to visit or travel to Canada, they must first obtain a Visitor Visa. Whether this Visitor Visa will be required will depend on the applicants citizenship, as many countries are exempt. If you are in a exempt country you will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada, rather than a Visitor visa.
The following are requirements for individuals applying for a Visitor Visa:
- Have a valid travel document, i.e. passport
- Have sufficient funds for your stay to Canada
- Satisfy an immigration officer that you will depart Canada accordingly.
- Be in good health.
- Letter of invitation from someone who lives in Canada.
- Have no criminal record.
- Have no immigration related offences.
- Biometrics (if applicable).
If you wish to extend your Visitor Visa, it is wise to apply 30 days in advance of its expiry date. If your visa expires while you await a decision, you will have implied status.
This visa category is specifically tailored towards parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. This Super Visa will allow you to visit Canada for up to 2 years at a time without having to renew your status.
To be eligible under this category, you must:
- be a grandparent or parent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- be allowed to enter Canada.
- proof of relationship (normally through birth certificate).
- prove your child or grandchild meets a minimum income threshold.
- provide a written statement from that child or grandchild that he/she will give you financial support (Letter of Invitation).
- have valid Canadian medical insurance for at least 1 year.
- conduct a medical exam.
